Braces Care Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use an electric toothbrush with braces?

Yes, you can use an electric toothbrush with braces. Just make sure to use a soft-bristled head and brush gently around the brackets and wires.

Can I whiten my teeth while wearing braces?

While you can whiten your teeth when wearing braces, it is generally recommended to wait until after your braces are removed. The whitening solution cannot reach under your brackets, which means you’ll have spots on your teeth once your braces come off.

What do I do if I have a sore spot from my braces?

If you have a sore spot, you can use orthodontic wax to cover the area causing the irritation. Covering the brackets or wire with wax will prevent it from rubbing and irritating your mouth. We also recommend you rinse your mouth with warm salt water to soothe the area.

What should I do if I have a wire poking my cheek?

You can also use orthodontic wax to cover the end of the wire. If the wire is causing more severe pain or irritation, please contact us.

Which mouthwashes should I be using with braces?

We recommend using antibacterial, alcohol-free, fluoride mouthwash to clean your mouth. Fluoride helps encourage healthier teeth and gums. It is also best to avoid mouthwashes with whitening agents in them. Wait until your treatment is over to whiten your teeth without any wires or brackets in the way.

How do I care for my braces during travel?

To ensure you maintain excellent oral hygiene during your travels, it is best to pack an essential ortho-care kit. An essential ortho kit will include a travel toothbrush, one pack of wax, a spool of floss, one pack of floss threaders, and a compact mirror – along with your standard toothpaste and mouthwash. Stick to your regular brushing and flossing schedule, especially after meals. If you can’t brush right away, use mouthwash or water to rinse your mouth.
